MAS AONDE QUERIA CHEGAR: WIDE AWAKE.

The key to fully understanding Shyamalan may lie in his first film, Wide Awake. This 1998 picture was a box-office bomb (despite its strong cast including Robert Loggia, Dana Delany, and Denis Leary), and the only comedy the director has made to date 0though he wrote the script for Stuart Little).(Um parêntesis: Night não teve o apoio necessário da Miramax quando filmava OLHOS ABERTOS.

“ Wide Awake depicts a year in the life of Joshua Beal, a fifth grader in a Philadelphia Catholic school. As the movie opens, Joshua has just lost his beloved grandfather (Loggia) to bone cancer. He is utterly uninterested in school, and has to be dragged out of bed each morning by his parents. Then Joshua announces: "I'm going on a mission. I'm going to look for God to make sure my grandpa's OK."When he learned that his grandfather was dying, the boy asked him if he was afraid. No, the grandfather replied: "You know, I'll be all right, because God will take care of me." But does God really exist? It is to reassure himself on this count that Joshua sets off on his spiritual quest. The quest leads to an encounter with an ailing cardinal, the beginnings of an adolescent infatuation with a girl (symbolically named Hope), and comic mishaps involving a variety of classmates.Along the way, Joshua comes to empathize with other students--the fat kid who's always asking dumb questions because he's starved for attention, the bully whose bravado masks a deep-seated insecurity, and the class clown who's an epileptic. Finally, Joshua's compassion and good deeds are rewarded by an encounter with 'a child-like angel who assures him that his grandfather is indeed all right. At the end of the movie, Joshua gets ready for school easily. He is wide awake and attentive. Of course, there's a double meaning here. Josh is no longer a sluggish riser, but he's also newly awake to the needs of those around him, and to the existence of a higher realm. So it is with the titles of other Shyamalan films. Does a "sixth sense" indicate the ability to communicate beyond the grave, or does it suggest a talent for understanding the pain of others, and helping them resolve their problems?

Are the "signs" in Shyamalan's most recent movie the circular flattenings of crops in fields all over the world, or are they signposts--phenomena which indicate that our lives aren't ruled by chance but are guided by a grand design? "Always hold on to your faith. Faith will get you through," grandpa tells Joshua in Wide Awake. And that's what Shyamalan tells us in every movie. In the end, Shyamalan's characters wake up, develop a sixth sense, and see the signs pointing to a life of meaning. They do this not through ghostly experiences, close encounters of the creepy kind, or other manifestations of the paranormal, but rather through mundane, ordinary human interaction. Specifically, faith is achieved through empathy, sacrifice, heroism, and acts of kindness. From Joshua Beal to Graham Hess, Shyamalan explains to his audiences that this is how humans encounter God. Or, perhaps, this is how they make themselves worthy of an awareness of God, and of a share of his blessings.”

########################

"Writer and director M. Night Shyamalan has structured WIDE AWAKE into three segments: “The Questions”, “The Signs”, and “The Answers”. This wonder-filled film proves that questions can be powerful allies on a spiritual journey. It also demonstrates how attention, listening, and love are expressions of the sacred in everyday life. “I spent this year looking for something”, Joshua observes, “and ended up seeing everything around me. It’s like I was asleep. I’m wide awake now”.
